As expectations for timely, transparent communication continue to rise, public safety agencies face growing pressure to effectively manage media relations—especially during high-profile or critical incidents. This five-day, immersive training course is designed to equip Public Information Officers (PIOs), agency leaders, and other public-facing personnel with the essential skills needed to serve as trusted communicators on behalf of their agencies.
Participants will gain practical, real-world experience in managing public information through a combination of instruction, case studies, and scenario-based exercises. The course is appropriate for current and aspiring PIOs at all levels of experience, and for other sworn or non-sworn staff who may serve as media contacts or spokespersons.

Managing media inquiries with confidence and clarity
Writing effective news releases, fact sheets, and public updates
Planning and delivering successful press conferences
Developing engaging social media content and managing digital platforms
Legal and policy considerations in public information
Understanding your audience and strengthening community trust
Representing your agency as a credible Brand Ambassador
Pitching stories and working proactively with the media
On-camera practice and interview coaching
By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to handle real-time media demands, enhance their agency’s public image, and communicate with professionalism, accuracy, and empathy during both routine events and major incidents.
